online trading - 20 November: More Americans are surfing the net than ever before, according to a survey published by Chilton Research Services in October Nearly 4 in 10 adults (39.7%) reported using a computer to access the Internet or an online service. This percentage represents a significant growth in usage since April when Chilton conducted its previous Internet survey. At that time, 29% of adults reported that they used the Internet. While the number of consumers who own personal computers, currently about 45%, has shown only modest growth in the past six months, the number using the Internet has grown dramatically. The largest area of expansion is among those who access the Internet at work. Six months ago only 15% reported using the Internet at work; now more than 20% say they do. As in Chilton's previous survey, more people go online from somewhere outside the home (20.1% from work; 10% from place of education) than from home (23.1%). 2 July: The July release of the monthly Netcraft Web Server Survey reported that Apache server software was running on 512,768 (42.62%) of the world's 1,203,096-odd Web servers, compared with Microsoft's share of 16.90% (203, 316) and Netscape's of 11.76% (141,504).
